It’s official: Spring is here! It’s been a long time coming, but now that it’s here it’s time to enjoy lighter meals and discover new tastes… and we have lots of new products in store that should fit the bill.

From Spain we have authentic Calasparra paella rice. Cook it up with a pinch of Equagold’s saffron, add seafood and veges, and taste the difference!

A new Italian range is now available at Ashore from Colline & Castelli. To start with there’s a wonderful Polenta with Truffle, a super easy, super fast and super impressive option for home entertaining. Or if you prefer you could try one of their Risotto Mixes; either traditional Milanese or Mushroom Risotto.

If you’re planning a spring soup or a bean salad check out the dual purpose Ribollita Campagnola, a dried bean and vege mix: A combination of cannelloni, borlotti & corona beans with onion, tomato, celery & leeks.

Closer to home, from Little Wanganui on the West Coast we’ve got GlassEye Creek Wild Meat Sauce - a tasty, tangy, rich sauce to enjoy with equally rich red meats. Perfect with game, steaks, really good sausages, spare ribs, fish & chips, pizza, sandwiches...well, perfect with anything really.

Also new in are Kokako’s organic, fair trade coffee beans. In store you’ll also find their extremely popular organic, fair trade hot chocolate which comes in a very cute box - good as a gift; better still to keep for yourself! Other new products from Kokako are their single serve Gluten Free Brownie Bars, and their twin packs of Bliss Balls - organic, gluten free, preservative free, egg free, dairy free (Vegan). We know what you’re thinking … So, what’s in them? A delicious combination of chopped dates, figs, nuts, seeds and cocoa.

Last month we introduced Kapiti Candies' Toasted Marshmallows and Hokey Pokey to our selection of confectionery. These wonderful treats, from Paraparaumu, have proved so popular that we’ve added their new Chocolate Fish to the range. Gooey strawberry marshmallow smothered in thick milk chocolate - A Kiwi icon!

New from Church Road, in Wanaka, we have a lovely Dried Fruit Mix. Little pieces of finely chopped apple, nectarine, kiwifruit, apricot and cherry. Add to home-made muesli, to yoghurt and desserts, or use in fruit cakes and baking.

On the wine and beer front we have, back in store after a lengthy absence, Armageddon from Auckland’s own Epic Brewery. Not for the faint-hearted this powerful I.P.A. is a 6.66%er! Full of hops. Full of taste.

And finally, to return to Europe, we’ve got a rather nice Cecchi 2008 Chianti in store right now. Produced in Tuscany, amongst the hills of the Chianti region, it’s fruity and well balanced, and the perfect accompaniment for those risotto dishes. And what’s more it comes in a choice of either a standard wine bottle or a traditional chianti ‘basket’ bottle - Just the thing for converting into a funky, retro, table lamp base.
