What's this all about?
In case you've just randomly surfed your way here, you should know that we're a small, independent, family-run, kiwi-owned and (hopefully) fun shop in Birkenhead, selling the good stuff from NZ and abroad.
Mainly in our shop, but also on-line.
Food, that is.
Beer and wine, too.
The sort of stuff that you can't easily get elsewhere.
That includes lots of Italian, French, British, and some german, Dutch, Greek, and other countries' foods, wine and beer; but mostly we stock great NZ artisan products.
Ingredients are something we're big on as well, as are gift hampers and baskets.
Who?
We made this shop because it's what we wanted to do: to work locally, to offer a choice, to make a difference, to share with our community, to work together, to have some fun, to escape from Powerpoint meetings. We are Julia and Don Pointon: A Geordie and a Kiwi, with two very confused kids.
Please come and see us... You don't need to wear black. You don't need to speak loudly for the benefit of other shoppers about your wonderful / busy / celebrity life. You don't need to ponce about showing off the contents of your shopping basket. If you did those things we'd probably kick you out anyway. Ashore's not like that.
Wear your jandals and your old t-shirt. Have a chat and compare your leaking roof problems with ours. Take your time.

About Birkenhead
Birkenhead Town Centre is easily accessible from Onewa Rd, Hinemoa St or Glenfield Rd / Birkenhead Ave. Birkenhead is not a photocopied plastic mall, nor is it all $2 shops... it's more like a typical provincial kiwi town, which just happens to have been enveloped by North Shore City. (And incidentally, that's part of why we have chosen to live and work here.) All the banks have branches in Birkenhead, there's a nice town centre with a shopping centre, supermarket, Red Shed, chemists, P.O., real barbers and hairdressers, Bob the Butcher, (and Bob the Barber - a different bloke), a brand new library, and a lot more than you'd expect to find in terms of interesting little independently-owned shops, without the piped music and gormless staff, nor the feeling that you're in a huge carpark.
That said, just down Rawene Rd there is a huge FREE public carpark, behind the post office that is, and the carpark there is about 50 metres walk away from our front door. There's another FREE carpark under the shopping centre - accessible from the Highbury Bypass, Birkenhead and Mokoia Rd (and about the same distance to walk to get to us.)
Market Days
We've been at the Birkenhead Artisan Market since day one, and will continue to support this community event. (Thanks Toni for making it happen.) It's at the community house on Hinemoa Street, and features some great arts, craft and food. Lots of interesting other bits and pieces, too. It's fun and friendly and a nice place to hang out for a lazy while on a Saturday morning. There are some top cafés thereabouts, too, if you feel the need to park-up for a bit.
Our usual market line-up involves a lot of fresh bread from Loaf and Pandoro, Evansdale cheeses, and some other tasty treats from our usual in-store range. Our prices are always marked-down (it's too hard on our little brains, otherwise), and our sales patter is the smoothest you'll encounter this side of Borough.
Markets are on the third Saturday of each month, from 8.30am till 1:00pm. The earlier you come, the more likely you will see Julia or Don in a state of half-slumber, but also the more likely you will get what you want. The bread usually sells out, so don't be too late.
